on this day nine years ago

Nine years ago on this day my Father passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. He was in his usual morning routine walking through the garden with Barbara and having a cup of tea. He had to deal with our dog chasing some passers by on bicycles, and he wasn't feeling right. So, he went back to bed and just like that he died on his bedroom floor. He had a massive heart attack, and was gone by the time the ambulance arrived. He didn't spill his tea, he set it down before he fell. I wish I could say it gets easier to accept, but each year on this day it brings me the same deep sadness and longing that words cannot express. I can still smell his breath, feel his stubbly cheek and remember what it feels to be in his arms. I don't know what else to say... Except I miss you Dad, and I love you.

Happy Passover everyone

We had a delicious and fun time at Gam and Pa's house having a seder/birthday party for Emily. She turns 17 this week and is the most beautiful, smart and funny girl I know. Happy Passover everyone, and happy birthday Emily Sussman Roberts.

My sister is having a baby!

Just a few weeks here
12 weeks here! Doesn't it look like the baby is smiling?

My Dear little sister, Vanessa and her husband Simon are having a baby. I am thrilled beyond words, I think about it so much :) For Solomon and Donna it will be so wonderful to have a little baby to hold and care for. When she delivers (September 28) Solly will be one month away from three years old. He will be very interested in the little bundle for sure! Dede will also be inquisitive for sure. Here are some sonograms of the little one. Vanessa wants a girl, we find out May 14th what the sex is ! We better start building our family compound on Cozumel...

Thank you President Obama

Adoption Tax Credit Extended and Improved

Joint Council is pleased to confirm that the Adoption Tax Credit (ATC), which was scheduled to expire in 2010, was extended for one-year (through December 31, 2011). The highlights of the ATC are;

  • The maximum credit was increased from $12,150 to $13,170,
  • The ATC is now retroactive to January 1, 2009. This represents a potential increase of $1,000 for adoptive families.
  • The ATC was made refundable. If a family has no tax liability, the IRS will refund the amount due.

The extension of the ATC through 2011, was passed as part of the health care reform bill which was signed into law by President Obama on Monday, March 22, 2010. There was some concern that the ATC would be included in the reconciliation process, however we have confirmed that it is not part of reconciliation which means the ATC is law until December 31, 2011.

Joint Council along with many other advocates and adoptive families have long advocated for making the ATC permanent. We applaud Congress and the Obama administration for the extension and continue to call for a permanent tax credit.

The ATC is a critically important element in finding permanent families for children in the U.S. foster care system and the children of our world, who live without permanent parental care. The ATC makes adoption a viable option for many families who may otherwise be unable to afford to adopt. We again applaud the extension and improvements to the Adoption Tax Credit.

Sick babies

Both kids are sick, they have had a nasty cold pretty much since we went to a playgroup... Now, in the lovely second stages of the cold they get the ear infections. Brad brought them to the doctor yesterday and they are both on ten day cycles of augmentin. Yuk, I hate augmentin. Once, after surgery I had to take it and I felt like I was dying. It can produce some bad reactions so I am on mummy watch to make sure they fare well. Linnea and Vanessa are in Costa Rica learning cool things and I am very much missing them and our daily talks. We are working on Paty's US visa and she is now in english classes down there in Mexico. Cross your fingers for her, it's an amazing opportunity for her :)
More later.

Back in the Pacific Northwest

We made it home safely late last night, after a loooong flight with the kids (we managed to all get on the same flight instead of having to split it into 2 days of separate travel). All is well here and everything is blooming for springtime. Solly and DeDe had fun playing with all their toys here, many more toys than they have in Playa for sure. Pictures tomorrow:)
